Super Sunday

Today was a busy day.  The weather was nice which was great since it stormed yesterday and we were able to get quite a bit done.  We started the day off with maple iced donuts (YUM!  The breakfast of champions!) and the newspapers.  Then we made a quick trip to Wal-Mart to pick up some more soil for the potatoes.  Boo and I covered up the potatoes again, while Crazy played in his treehouse with a neighbor boy, and Hubby weedwhacked.  Lunch time was quickly followed by naptime for Boo and more playtime and popsicles for Crazy and two friends.

Once Boo finished her nap we headed over to the local town festival.  We weren't too impressed but we also can't expect too much seeing as we live in a small town.  The highlight of the festival (at least for me!) was the Trolley Stop Ice Cream Shoppe.  It's a old trolley that has been restored and turned into a ice cream shop on wheels.  Crazy ordered the "Dirt Cup" which was chocolate ice cream covered with crushed Oreos and gummy worms.  Hubby got a rootbeer float and I ordered the Scratch Ankle berry split.  Delicious!

After we finished off the ice cream we headed over to the river so Crazy could watch some of the boats going by.  When he started getting a little cranky and asking us to carry him we knew it was time to go.  We ran some errands on the way home and then decided to hit up McDonald's for dinner after listening to Crazy beg all day to go because he wanted some more dragons (toy in the Happy Meal).  After driving to 3, yes 3, McDonald's, we finally realized that they are completely out of the dragons and have moved on to a new toy.  Yes, there were some tears and a near meltdown but we managed to sidestep it.  Unfortunately Crazy's exhaustion caught up to him shortly after his bath.  I was doing some laundry when I heard him crying and yelling.  This is the conversion that ensued:

Me:  What's wrong?
Crazy:  (crying) I don't like Daddy!  I want to sell him!
Me:  What did you just say?  You want to SELL Daddy?
C:  Yes!  I want to sell him to another family.
Me:  Well how much money are we going to ask for him?
C:  $2
Me:  Well I think we should ask for a lot more than $2.
C:  Okay, $3.

The entire time this conversion was taking place I was trying not to laugh.  But I'm happy to say that now he's fine with keeping his Daddy, at least for now.  He even let Hubby read to him which he normally doesn't want him too.  Hubby told Crazy to go pick out some books and put them in his dump truck and then bring them to him to read.  After about 5 minutes Crazy comes back into the living room with his bedtime books.  I think from now on Hubby will be a little more specific when it comes to the number of books.

Expect the Unexpected

I was making lunch today and went into the garage where Hubby had disappeared to earlier to let them know it was time to eat and found this:

Yes, those are my children in a ladder stand that Hubby bought on Friday night.  I had completely forgotten that Hubby had bought it and definitely didn't think he would put it up in the garage.   The only thing I could think of was that it was going to come crashing down and the kids were going to fall out and break multiple bones.  The kids (and Hubby) thought it was great.  Crazy even requested to eat his lunch inside the stand.  No, I didn't let him, because I'm mean like that.

Garden Update

My vegetable garden is still alive and growing fast!  Hard to believe right?  I waited too long to thin the carrots out it so it was quite a task.  The gardening book I have said that you should cut them off with scissors at ground level so you don't damage the roots.  You're supposed to only have one carrot plant every 3 inches.  Well I had about 30.  It took me 30 minutes of triming to thin them out and I probably did more damage to them thinning them than if I had left them alone.  Only time will tell though...

I thinned out my onions as well.  They were much easier to thin than the carrots.  Even though they were only about 3-4 inches tall and no onion bulb had formed yet, they definitely had that onion smell!

The top section is cucumbers, the middle is onion rows, and the bottom is 3 rows of carrots and 2 bell pepper plants

Extra cucumber plants I threw in a pot

I'll post some more pictures of the garden soon.  The cucumber plants are growing like crazy and I need to start running them up the tomato cages I put in.  The potatoes kind of got away from me and didn't cover them up when I was suppose to (when they are 6-7 inches tall).  I need to get more soil because the giant bag I had wasn't enough for all 3 trashcans.  As a side note, the butterfly pictured above was eventually caught by the cat.  Hubby was slow to react because he was apparently unaware that cats will do anything to get a bug/insect/anything they want and the butterfly was biten to death.  He now resides in a glass jar on Crazy's nightstand.

She's at it again...

Seriously, we can't leave her alone for 10 seconds anymore.  Looks like I'll be buying more toothpaste sooner than expected.

Lipstick Anyone?

I was cleaning the kitchen this evening when Boo came running in.  I look over to see this:

I was less than thrilled but thankfully she only got the lipstick on herself and not anywhere else.  I guess it's time to lock up the makeup!

Beach Day!

Sunday the kids and I met up with one of my friends and spent some time at the beach and pool.  Crazy ran up and down the beach like a wild man.  We couldn't figure out what he was doing.  Boo enjoyed herself but stayed sitting in my lap most of the time.  After Crazy stated that he was thirsty and wanted to go home for the fourth time we packed it up and hit the pool.  Crazy demonstrated his newly acquired swimming skills which included floating on his back with a noodle and treading water also with the aid of the noodle.  His swimming lessons are really paying off.  He's now comfortable with relaxing his head in the water and getting water in his ears.  Hopefully by the time the swim lessons are over he'll be able to float without the noodle.  When the pool got to cold for us we hoped in the hot tub which was lukewarm.  After 15 minutes or so they turned the hot tub on and we decided to get out, everyone except Boo who pretty much demanded to stay in.  Good thing Mommy has veto power!  My friend had made us a picnic dinner that we enjoyed by the pool and then we headed to her condo for a while.  The kids had a blast and I enjoyed getting out of the house for a little while after cleaning all weekend.  After Sunday I'm actually looking forward to beach trips this summer!

The Cluttered Kitchen

This weekend Hubby is on a cross-country flight to Houston so I thought it would be the perfect time to declutter the kitchen.  I started with the refrigerator.  It was disgusting!  I can't believe I'm sharing these pictures with you because it's highly embarrassing the state the kitchen was in.

Before

I put everything in coolers and then pulled it out and unplugged it.  I would just like to add here that Hubby doubted my ability to pull the refrigerator out by myself but I did it with ease!!  I soaked the drawers in the tub and went to town with baking soda and water.  It took a lot of elbow grease to clean some parts of it.  I took off everything from the outside of the refrigerator and only put a few magnets back on.  That took a lot of self-control because I'm a magnet freak.

                                                    After

Once the refrigerator was back up and running, I started on the cabinets.  I got rid of two set of glasses, a ton of the kids' plates, any tupperware that didn't have a lid, and half my pots and pans.  Next up was the pantry.

                                                   Before
We have a pretty large pantry that you couldn't even walk into because of all the stuff on the floor.  After two hours, three donation bags, and two trash bags the pantry was decently organized.  Crazy went to town with my new dustbuster sucking up all the dirt and cat food on the floor.  He absolutely loves that thing!

                                                    After

I didn't finish the kitchen today simply because it's a lot to tackle in one day with two kids to keep entertained by myself.  Tomorrow I'll finish up the oven, which Boo almost burned her hand on while it was self-cleaning, wipe down the walls, and clean the countertops.  By the time Hubby comes home he won't recognize the place.

Garbage Can Potatoes

My new project is attempting to grow potatoes in a garbage can.  Key word is attempting. I'll post pictures soon.  But in the mean time picture 32 gallon trashcans with a foot of potting soil inside them.  I've got three of them going, two with superior white potatoes and one with sweet potatoes.  Visions of potatoes (stuffed in a trashcan) dance in your head...

Update:

Here are the promised pictures of my trashcan potatoes.

Defying My Black-thumb

This year I'm trying my hand at growing a raised bed garden.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed I don't kill everything.  I'm definitely not a green-thumb kind of gal.  Hubby made my raised bed and Lowe's was gracious enough to take a lot of money from us for all the garden soil we needed.  We decided to grow green bell peppers, carrots, cucumbers, and onions in the raised bed.  White and sweet potatoes would go in the garbage cans.  I bought pepper and cucumber plants because I needed a head start and carrot and onion seeds.  We spent half the day filling the bed with soil and planting.  Then after all was said and done I realized I had bought vine cucumbers and not cucumber bushes (yes, you can grow them on a bush).  So we headed to Wal-Mart to pick up tomato trellis things (obviously I know nothing about growing tomatoes or any other plant).  I'm planning on running the cucumber vines up the trellis.  Should be interesting to see how it turns out.  That is if I can keep them alive!

Happy Easter!
